10 Famous Fashion Photographers You Should Know

In our previous blog post on the topic of fashion photography, we discussed the importance of reading fashion magazines and following the work of famous fashion photographers to get a feel for the different styles and techniques they employ.

So in this post, we’re going to shine a spotlight on some of the best fashion photographers working in the industry today. Of course, this list only scratches the surface, as there are so many talented photographers to choose from, but it’s a good place to start, especially if you’re new to the industry.

 

1. Bruce Weber


Bruce Weber is an American fashion photographer who has worked with high profile fashion brands and magazines including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Vogue, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. He is best known for his iconic black-and-white photography and is one of the few professional photographers to still shoot with film.

2. Zhang Jingna


Zhang Jingna is a Chinese-Singaporean photographer based in New York. Although she initially studied fashion design, she discovered her passion for photography at eighteen and decided to pursue it fulltime just two years later. Her work has since been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Photo Vogue and Elle, and she’s won numerous awards including the 2013 Young Photographer of the Year and 2013 Best Beauty/Glamour Photographer.

3. Mario Sorrenti


Mario Sorrenti is an Italian fashion photographer based in New York. He’s best known for his work on the iconic 1993 campaign featuring Kate Moss for Calvin Klein’s Obsession fragrance, but he has and continues to work with numerous high profile fashion brands including Lancôme, Benetton, Prada and Paco Rabanne.

4. Victor Demarchelier


Victor Demarchelier is a New York-based fashion photographer and the son of renowned fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier. He started out working in his father’s studio in 2006 after studying economics and studio art, but has since made a name for himself working with big names like Victoria’s Secret, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and GQ.

5. Yelena Yemchuk


Yelena Yemchuk is a Ukrainian fashion photographer and painter. Her photography is known for its surrealistic and whimsical qualities, and she’s provided photos for albums by Savage Garden and Rufus Wainwright. Her photos have also appeared in the New Yorker and AnOther Magazine as well as British and Japanese Vogue.

6. Georges Antoni


Georges Antoni is an Australian fashion photographer and television host who’s well-known for his appearances on television shows such as Australia’s Next Top Model and Project Runway Australia. His career began almost by accident after a chain of health foods shops he started failed and he applied for a job as a photographer with a modelling agency despite having no experience in fashion. His confidence paid off and his work has since appeared in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. 

7. Alice Hawkins


Alice Hawkins is a British fashion and portrait photographer based in London. She started out as a party photographer for i-D Magazine, but has since worked with Russian Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as shooting portraits of celebrities like Kanye West and Marilyn Manson. Despite being a fashion photographer, Hawkins likes to push boundaries with her photography and enjoys photographing people who wouldn’t traditionally be considered ‘fashionable’ or ‘beautiful.’

8. Arnaud Pyvka


Arnaud Pyvka is a French fashion photographer based in Paris. He’s also the co-founder and publisher of the French publication Double Magazine, and has worked with luxury brands such as Hermès, Levi’s and Giorgio Armani. His photos are intimate and abstract and he enjoys capturing candid moments and human emotions.

9. Emma Tempest


Emma Tempest is a British fashion photographer who works in London, Paris and New York. Originally from Cornwall, Tempest says the sea and countryside have greatly influenced her work, but it’s her unique use of colours and light that has helped her create her signature style. Her photography has featured in W Magazine, Vogue, Teen Vogue and Allure.

10. Annie Leibovitz


Annie Leibovitz is an American fashion and portrait photographer. She’s best known for her portraits of celebrities like John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Whoopi Goldberg, and Demi Moore. Leibovitz started out as a staff photographer for Rolling Stone magazine in 1970 and became chief photographer in 1973.  She has since worked for Vanity Fair and Vogue, and continues to create distinctive celebrity portraits.
