A preview of Karen Mcbride's Photobook Month Manchester talk

On Thursday we’ll be at the Deaf Institute, Manchester, for our North West leg of the Photobook Month Tour. And we’re excited. Very excited. Because Manchester means Karen Mcbride is our speaker.

Now you’ve no doubt heard of Karen – she’s probably Manchester’s most famous female photographer and we’re big fans of her work.

Elvis

Karen is a massive fan of Elvis. She looks for “a little bit of Elvis” in everything she does. Which might explain why, in 2006, she toured with Robbie Williams to chronicle his life on the road. Nobody’s comparing Robbie to Elvis, but it’s the magic that Karen goes looking for. And we dare say she found a little of it in Mr Williams.

Passion for music photography

Karen is passionate about music. Her knowledge and love for it knows no bounds. What’s great about Karen is she’s not what you’d call a ‘hipster’. She knows the new kids on the block, sure. But there’s certainly no musical snobbery about her. She just loves music. Like her love for former Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie, who she ran into at a festival this year.

Practical tips

As well as giving a talk about her working life in photography, Karen will also be workshopping some practical tips for better shooting. This is quite a rare thing. Karen doesn’t give too many talks. But she will for us. This is not to be missed.

Shared stories

Stories are in abundance whenever you’re around Karen. And not in a ‘name-droppy’ way. She’s one of those photographers who’s entirely her own lady. She’s seen and done some amazing things. And she appears to be enjoying them like a fan would. She took pictures for years and years before she called herself a photographer.

Sneak preview of that book

While on a trip to Nashville, Karen had the pleasure of meeting Elvis’ famed guitarist Scotty Moore. And he told her something that would give her the title for her new photobook made with Bob Books – “Elvis Would Have Really Liked You”. Karen says: “we’d been having a few drinks and he turned to me and said: Elvis would have really liked you. How could that not be the title of my book?”
