Top Places in Latin America for Photography

From incredible wildlife-spotting opportunities in the Amazon Jungle to watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu, Latin America has some incredible destinations for amateur and professional photographers alike.

We have partnered up with Latin America specialists, Journey Latin America, to round up some of the top destinations to take incredible photos. 

Machu Picchu, Peru 

One of the most iconic destinations in South America and a UNESCO Heritage Site, the ruins of Machu Picchu are a must for anyone visiting Peru. Get there in time for sunrise and take wonderful photos of the ancient city emerging from the clouds. Follow in the footsteps of the Incas hiking up to Machu Picchu or take a scenic train ride from one of the nearby towns.

 Patagonia 

From epic glaciers to windswept forests, Patagonia, the region situated within Argentina and Chile is an ideal destination for nature photography. Torres del Paine National Park is home to the rock ‘towers’, which you can see on a number of different hiking trails. Discover Los Glaciares National Park and if you are lucky, get a shot of carving - when ice breaks off the glaciers and comes crashing down into the water below.

Amazon Jungle 

The biggest rainforest in the world, the Amazon Jungle can be reached via 9 countries in South America including Peru, Brazil and Colombia. It is home to over three million species of flora and fauna making it a wonderful destination for any budding wildlife photographers. If you’re very lucky you might capture a shot of the elusive jaguar prowling through the jungle.

Rio Carnival 

Hosted in February every year, the vibrant Rio Carnival draws thousands of revellers to the Brazilian city. Grab a ticket for the parade and capture the festivities as each of the samba schools perform to the crowds. From extravagant coloured costumes to huge display stages, your camera reel will be bursting with colour on each photo taken. Afterwards, relax on Copacabana or Ipanema beach to wind down from the weekend thrills.

Bogota 

The capital of Colombia is a creative hub with a number of museums and galleries to explore. It is also home to some fantastic street art, depicting the cultural and relevant history of this beautiful South American country. Head to the historic La Candelaria neighbourhood which hosts artwork from both Colombian and international artists alike.

Iguazu Falls 

The mighty Iguazu Falls can be visited from both Argentina and Brazil but make sure to bring a waterproof camera bag. They are the largest waterfalls in the world are situated within the national park shared by both countries. Capture photos of the waterfalls in action taking one of the walkways, or for those who want to feel the splash, you can take boat rides that bring you close to the falls. 

Belize

Underwater photography can be difficult to get right, but once mastered the results can be wonderful. If you want to practice your skills, head to the Central American country of Belize known for its beautiful blue waters. For a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience you can swim with the mighty but docile whale sharks who occupy the waters around April and May.

Cocora Valley, Colombia 

Situated in the lush coffee region of Colombia, the Cocora Valley is known for its beautiful wax palm trees, iconic to the area and the tallest palms in the world. Hiking through the valley is a wonderful way to take beautiful nature shots as you cross farm lands and cloud forests along the way.

Costa Rica 

Arguably one of the best places to spot wildlife in Latin America, Costa Rica is home to over 500000 plant and animal species. From jaguars to sloths, the natural parks here are an eco-paradise, making it a mecca for nature and wildlife photographers. Head to Tortuguero National Park to see turtles nesting on the beach or book a tour in Manuel Antonio National Park, home to beautiful beaches and winding forest trails which are packed with a number of different species. Keep your eyes peeled to the trees to catch a glimpse of the rare squirrel monkeys and listen out to the sounds of macaws and toucans flying above.

Galapagos Islands 

One of the most unique destinations in the world, the Galapagos Islands, situated on the coast of Ecuador are an archipelago home to rare species of wildlife and plants only found on the islands themselves. Book a cruise and you could be lucky enough to see the giant Galapagos tortoises or the iconic blue-footed booby, a bird native to the islands and discovered by Charles Darwin.
