What made Photobook Month 2012 great...

27th June 2012

Photobook Month 2012, our 2nd annual month long celebration of photobooks, has come to a close.  Many thanks to our four fantastic speakers who inspired and enlightened us, Hasselblad Studio for hosting the events and all of you who took part.

If you weren't able to join us this year, here are a few highlights of what you've missed.

June 6th - Mike Trow

This was a once in a lifetime chance for an audience with the British Vogue commissioning photo editor.  Mike shared invaluable tips on creating the perfect portfolio and what it takes to get your photos in Vogue.  It was an informal evening with loads of discussion and questions for our top class speaker.

A few top tips from the night:

  • Be ruthless when editing your portfolio - if you aren't sure about the photo, leave it out.
  • The first photo in your portfolio is your calling card. Select carefully.
  • Be professional - Whether you are making the tea or a world class photographer. Show up on time and be prepared to do your job.

June 12th - Martin Parr

The audience came from all over the country to hear Magnum Photographer, Martin Parr, speak on one of his favourite topics. His talk covered his hobby of collecting photobooks and the top photobooks of the 20th & 21st centuries as well as questions from the audience.

A few top photobooks discussed on the night:

  • New York by William Klein - tipped to be the most influential photobook of the 20th century
  • Hackney Wick by Stephen Gill
  • Londres de Nuit by Bill Brandt -1938

June 20th - Marianne Taylor

A truly inspiring evening with wedding photographer Marianne Taylor. 'Remembering what really matters' - Marianne talked about importance of storytelling and getting your client to connect emotionally to the way you tell their story. She also discussed how to shoot with your book in mind and consider the layout as you are taking the photographs. We also got to see Marianne's own Bob Book which she managed to whip up despite her very busy schedule.

June 26th - Jeremy Leslie

Our final Photobook Month 2012 event was with design guru and founder of Magculture, Jeremy Leslie. Jeremy discussed how to make a stand out publication. It was fantastic to get an insight into Jeremy thoughts on editorial design and discover some interesting publications which are at the top of their game. Some of our favourite publcations mentioned were The Gentlewoman, Fantastic Man and Bloomberg Businessweek.

We're now looking forward to Photobook Month 2013.  We hope to see you all there.
